Halifax Nova Scotia Picking up the bike, Wednesday, 6 June 2012, Day 2

Amusing T Shirt

Just in case you were worried about me getting kidnapped well check out the photo above I have made it more difficult for potential kidnappers !

Today was glorified treasure hunt with the end result being my motorcycle and me reunited. I got a bus into Halifax trying to find a Post Office to get a money order as that is the only form of payment that Wallenius Wilhelmsen would accept.  The nice lady behind the counter and me had some fun trying to get this accomplished what with all of the weird spellings and not enough space on the forms. Job 1 done. Next of to find the Wallenius Wilhelmsen office via Tim Horton’s (More on Tim Horton’s later) for breakfast. I find the building and its huge next to find the correct office suite which took a while as the building was actually 3 separate buildings and finding the right elevator shaft for the office I wanted was proving difficult (Jet lag)

I finally found the right lift but then had to swap to another as it did not go to the floor I wanted. I handed the nice lady the money order and the notice of arrival (technical term me now an expert on the import and export of goods) and she gave me the instructions on how to get to the customs office which was another 15 min walk away.

Job 3 customs no problem there as I had no drugs and firearms on the bike according to me so they stamped the papers so job 4 was to get Auto port which was a 25 minute taxi ride away. Not for me as I had got a map of the public transport system of Halifax so instead I got a ferry from Halifax to Dartmouth and then on number 60 bus which stopped just outside where I wanted to be and only cost a couple bucks to get there rather than an expensive taxi ride.

Me on a ferry

It took about 15 minutes while they went to pick up my bike and after checking it was all there and nothing was broken or missing I had won the treasure hunt and I had successfully brought my motorcycle from the Netherlands to Canada and was on my way 🙂

Dartmouth Artie!

Picking up the bike

I spent the rest of the day doodling around Halifax getting used to driving in Canada and I also visited a graveyard where they had buried some of the bodies that they could find from the Titanic disaster this was a very interesting place.

Edmonton to Grande Prairie, Friday, 29 June 2012, Day 25

Camping Grand Prairie

Back in the saddle again a great day and I have finally reached the Rockies. Got out on the road at a reasonable time shame I had not seen more of Edmonton but you cannot do everything and choices need to be made. I had breakfast at Tim Horton’s and I hit the road pleasant rolling countryside so it looks like I have left the prairies behind and later just coming into Hinton my first sight of the Rockies and I knew that I had got across the prairies. I hit the road to Grande Cache and it was a wonderful winding roads with interesting scenery and I finally ended up in Grande Prairie camping again which sounds wonderful except the place is crawling with mosquitoes and the campsite for tents is miles from the loos complex I am watching the sun going down but not sure how much longer I can stand this as the mossies’ are driving me nuts its only 10pm  but I may be diving in my tent to escape them!!!

I couldn’t stand it any longer so I am hiding in my tent doing a Sudoku what an exciting life I am leading

Back into the Mountains Yeah 🙂

Hyder to Smithers, Saturday, 14 July 2012, Day 40

Wet day

Dry, Wet, Dry Wet, sort of dry nope-wet etc. That is how it went today I slept in till 10am today I am not sure if I am short of sleep but I am still feeling very fatigued. I packed the bike and headed up a dirt road to a bear-viewing place I had been to the last time I was here and it was heaving and I did see a bear however this time I was the only one there and they had not seen any bears yet this year so I did not hang around to long and headed back to Stewart for some breakfast in a nice bakery I knew from last time. And then it started to pour with rain and as I was only a couple of miles from breakfast  I decided to keep going and not bother with me waterproofs. However this decision did not take into consideration a 10 minute wait at some road works and an interrogation at the border while crossing back into Canada so I was soaking wet by the time I got to the café. It had not changed so had great little breakfast and a dry out then I eventually decide to hit the road as it was not raining so hard as I hit the road but for the rest of the day it was either pouring with rain so I got soaked to the skin and then would dry out again only to get wet all over again 30 minutes later so as I said at the beginning.Dry, Wet, Dry Wet, sort of dry nope-wet etc.

New Hazelton

I had done this route before and it was wet then to so I was not very appreciative then and or now and I am just trying to eat as many km’s  as possible but I ran out of steam at the first petrol stop after doing 360km it was about 5pm and I had no energy to go any further and I had spotted a Tim Horton’s so after fuelling up the bike I went to the info center  asking about cheap accommodation this time the lad was none to bright as normally the folks in these places are really on the ball but this lad knew nothing about the town and pointed me to the brochures that is not what I wanted however another young lady there stepped in and I find myself in a Guest House which is a bit more than my usual budget but the cheapest in town and its very nice. I need to look after myself as I am such a tired little bear so a little posh every now again is just what the doctor ordered. I went to Safeway to buy my microwave dinner (save money this way) and I have been playing with the computer all night seemingly it looks like drop box has deleted all my old pictures which I was storing there as a back up as I reached my limit or something so I am now moving everything to Amazon Cloud instead this will take a while I am not sure about Drop Box anymore or maybe the stuff is out there but I cannot find it which is not much help. So folks who have got access to drop box can you tell me what you can see and  if it looks like all the early stuff has gone and all you see is the latest? Beddy byes I cannot think straight anymore

Seaside to Reedsport, Sunday, 29 July 2012, Day 55

Pacific Highway Nr 1

Today’s theme was Lighthouses. I went from Lighthouse to Lighthouse along the Oregon Pacific Coast. I did about 200 miles long day as I was stopping a lot to walk around the parks the lighthouses all seem to be located in. The weather was dull and overcast in the morning but later the sun showed itself. All in all a very pleasant day whizzing down the coast and stopping any time I saw a sign for a lighthouse or something that interested me so a very relaxing day.

Cape Meares

I thought I had found a replacement option for Tim Horton’s in the US that being Safeway the supermarket they do a cheap ham egg and cheese sandwich for 2 dollars and there is normally a Starbucks there to get a coffee as well so a perfect solution the problem is that you have to queue for the sarnie and normally there is an even larger separate queue for the coffee.

All I want is a simple cup of coffee my god they have made coffee consumption complex 😦  So I am not sure this is the solution. Scenery has changed instead of mountains and lakes I have cliffs and the Pacific Ocean instead of Bears and Moose I have whales and seals and loads of bird I do not even know the names of. So in short a nice run. At about 6pm ish I was starting to flag so started to look for a cheap motel. I had seen loads during the day but as soon as I start looking there are none around so I keep on rolling on for another hour and half and was even going to default to the tent! When I saw the sign I had been looking for a cheap and cheerful motel and the Internet had enough speed has that has also enabled me to upload the videos of the interview that Mathilda did of me in Chase so you can now see these at http://youtu.be/ry1jS_sXlQA

They are worth a giggle at my expense.

Just what I was looking for

I have been a bit low last the couple of days but feeling much better today I am not sure why maybe it’s the change in pace or rhythm I do not know but I will take it or it must be all the lighthouses!

Flint to Niagara Falls, Friday, 24 August 2012, Day 81

Niagara Falls at night

It looks like my forgetfulness is getting worse. I packed the bike checked the room to see if I not had left everything then went to hand in my key when I realised I had forgotten my helmet even after checking the room missed that key bit of kit! So my rituals to ensure I have everything are no longer working note to me I must focus more or I am going to lose something important. I blame the heat my poor little brain is frazzled. Now you are going to think I am a seriously sad git when I tell you the following. I had heard that there are Tim Horton’s in the North East of the US so last night I had Googled it to find the nearest one and joy of joys there was one just down the road so had my first destination already sorted now the sad thing is not only did I have breakfast at Tim Horton’s I had afternoon tea and later a late supper there as well so that is 3 times in one day so new record had been set. In my defence I have not been there since I left Canada nearly a month ago but even I have to admit this is quite a sad little addiction I have developed but I guess there are worse things to be addicted to. After breakfast and my joyful reunion with Tim (It was not as good as I remember it to be  yet I still went back twice that day!!) I hit the road as I had not done as many mile yesterday as I wanted well I did but not all of them in the right direction so still had quite a tough day in the saddle today adding on my little diversion as I either got lost or todays case in search of a petrol stations. Still hot in the thirties centigrade still but other than the heat another nice days riding again not many photos taken or stops for photos as it is quite pretty and nice country side but not very photogenic or may be I have been spoilt rotten by gorgeous scenery over the last months or I over did it on the photo front in Chicago but I was struggling to find things to that I thought would make a good photos so grand total of 3 compared to about 100 I took in Chicago and 100 I took in Niagara Falls. That’s does not mean it is not nice just not that photogenic with my mediocre camera skills. Highlight today other than nearly running out of petrol and been unable to find a petrol station when I needed one was that a bee stung me! Riding along in sort of rush hour traffic because it is so hot I have my jacket partly loose and my sleeves are also opens allowing air to flow though keeping me sort of cool. Today a felt something go up my sleeve and was buzzing around my arm. Instead of just relaxing and letting it find its way out I panicked and pulled of the road ASAP into some kind of parking lot and started flapping my arms trying to get whatever it was out. Well you guessed it was bee and did not like my flapping so it stung me. Ouch but I guess it was my own fault.

Got to Niagara Falls at 7pm first hostel I tried was full but I knew of another one around the corner which had a space. The plan was to try to get this up to date and then go to the falls tomorrow but the strange little old French chap Charlie running the hostel mentioned that tonight there will be a fire work display over the falls tonight so a change of plans grabbed a late dinner at you know where and walked down to the fall. It was getting dark and to be honest as I was not to impressed with what I saw but my view on this changed later.

Niagara Falls inhabitants

Fireworks where good this time looking up at them rather than looking down at them better this way me thinks. I walked back to the hostel tried to do some work on this but the internet was not working I am not sure it ever had a Chinese/Canadian bloke and me tried to get it working well mostly him but we were unsuccessful so I called it a night as is was late a hot night in the dorm tonight.
